Do I need a microphone?

iPads, Chromebooks and most laptops have internal microphones. For these devices, an external microphone is not required. Depending on the sound environment, an external microphone may be helpful in terms of ensuring audio quality.

Many desktops do not have internal microphones. For these devices, external microphones are required.

 

You should be able to test the microphone in your computer’s audio settings in system preferences or control panel.


Windows microphone settings:

Connect a microphone to your Windows 7 or Windows 8 PC
Connect a microphone to your Windows Vista PC
Connect a microphone to your Windows XP PC

Mac microphone settings:

Change the microphone volume on OS X El Capitan (10.11)
Change the microphone volume on OS X Yosemite (10.10)
Change the microphone volume on OS X Mavericks (10.9)
Change the microphone volume on OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)
Change the microphone volume on OS X Lion (10.7)
Change the microphone volume on OS X Snow Leopard (10.6)
