Is Literably appropriate for students with speech impediments or other disabilities?

Like every assessment, Literably is not valid for all students. Literably is not designed to yield valid results for students with significant hearing, seeing, or speaking impairments. While our graders give their best effort when scoring all assessments, sometimes students’ unique speech issues may make it difficult to produce Literably results that their teachers are looking for. Ultimately, we leave it up to individual teachers to determine if Literably is appropriate for their students with IEPs.

If you aren't sure whether Literably will work well for a student with a speech impediment, we encourage you to try it and review the graded running record while listening to the audio file. If you feel like the running record does not reflect your student's reading, you can print out Literably texts and questions and conduct an assessment manually (i.e., via "paper/pencil"). To print a Literably passage, click on the preview button (it looks like a magnifying glass) next to the book's title in the Next Assessment column of the teacher dashboard and then click Print. 

Currently, the results from manually administered Literably assessments cannot be digitally uploaded to Literably and thus, students' reading levels (displayed on the teacher dashboard) won't adjust based on those "paper/pencil" results.  That said, teachers do have the option of manually updating the students’ next assessment levels in their dashboard (instructions here) based on the results from manually administered Literably assessments.

If your student struggles with their behavior but may not have a speech impediment or significant learning disability, you may consider sitting with your student while they assess.  More information on this topic can be found here.
