How to Give a Teacher-Administered Phonological Awareness Assessment Follow
Overview
In addition to having your students take a Phonological Awareness (PA) assessment independently, in the way described in this article, teachers also have the ability to administer the assessment one-on-one, using teacher-delivered instructions (instead of those delivered by Rudy the Dog). This gives teachers more control over the assessment experience and allows teachers to grade the assessment. This is especially helpful for younger students who may not be able to navigate the assessment experience independently, or whose oral responses may be hard to interpret by Literably graders.
Assigning a Teacher-Administered PA Assessment
To assign a teacher-administered PA assessment, click on the pencil icon from your dashboard to open the assignment sidebar, check on "Make a teacher administered assessment" under the assessment you would like to assign, and save your changes:
Administering the Assessment
On your dashboard, you will now see an option to Start Assessment for that student under the "Next Assessment" column. You can begin the assessment by clicking on this icon, without needing to login as the student.
Read the instructions on the first screen, then click "Start Assessment":
You will navigate through the assessment by clicking on the green arrow. The progress bar at the top of the screen will show you how many questions are left, and you can press "Pause" if you need to leave and resume at a later time.
Each section of the assessment will start with an Activity Practice. Read aloud the text after "Say," and click "Record student response" to start recording:
After your student responds, you should click "Correct" or "Incorrect." This will stop the recording:
If you click "Correct," you will be able to move to the next question. If you click "Incorrect," you should either enter the student's response, or check "No response" if they did not provide an answer. The student response should be transcribed exactly as given. If the response matches the target response exactly, you will see an error. If this is the case, you should either re-type the student's incorrect response or mark it as correct:
Once you've entered the student's response, you can press the green arrow to move to the next question. You also have the option to re-record the response by clicking on "Re-record response" in the lower-left corner. This may be helpful if there was a lot of background noise or an interruption during the first try, for example.
The real student questions will typically have two parts. In the first part, you will ask the student to say a word after you (this response is not recorded). The second part of the question will ask the student to isolate or manipulate sounds. This response should be recorded, and you should follow the directions above to record and score the student's response.
Clicking on the eye icon on the left side of the screen will reveal an Assessment Preview. This shows you which question you are on out of the full list of questions on the assessment. It also displays the questions students have answered correctly (green) and incorrectly (red):
If an assessment is paused, it can be resumed from your teacher dashboard. If another teacher or administrator also has access to this student from their dashboard, they also have the option of resuming the assessment with the student from their account.
Viewing Results
Once you complete a teacher-administered PA assessment with your student, you will be able to view the results in the same way that your normally would (more details here). You can regrade any questions you'd like using these directions.
There are some additional details that appear on teacher-administer PA results:
1. Under Assessment Overview, hovering over the initials after "Administered By" will display the teacher who administered the assessment. If more than one teacher administered the assessment, all initials will be displayed.
2. If during the assessment, you marked a student response as incorrect, and neither entered a response nor checked the box for "no response," this question will have a red flag next to it. It is recommended that you use the pencil icon to regrade this question:
3. After the assessment generates a score, Literably will recommend a next PA assessment for the student. This will automatically be a teacher-administered assessment. If you would like for the student to take a Literably-administered assessment, use the pencil icon and uncheck "Make a teacher administered assessment."
